Comune di Scilla
Overlooking the Strait of Messina, at the edge of the Costa Viola, Scilla has always intertwined myth and daily life. It is Homer's Scylla, the sea creature that watches over the currents facing Charybdis, and at the same time the fishing village of swordfish fishermen, luntri boats, and songs handed down through its alleys. On the cliff stands the thousand-year-old Ruffo Castle, while at its feet cluster Chianalea, the "Venice of the South," and the golden expanse of Marina Grande. Higher up watches over the San Giorgio district, the civil and spiritual heart of the town, rebuilt with tenacity after the earthquakes of 1783 and 1908. Here Raffaele Piria, father of modern chemistry, was born, and here art, faith and landscape merge into a single story, where Sicily seems just a step away and the Aeolian Islands close the horizon. Itineraries on Chianalea and Marina Grande will also be available soon.
