Complex of the Seven Churches of Santo Stefano
Hidden among the porticoes of the historic city centre, the Santo Stefano complex is one of the most fascinating and mysterious places in Italy. Known to the people of Bologna as the Sette Chiese — the Seven Churches — this extraordinary ensemble of overlapping and interconnected religious buildings tells over seventeen centuries of history, faith, and art.
The itinerary will guide you through a labyrinth of courtyards, cloisters, and basilicas where every threshold crossed is a step back in time: from its early Christian and Lombard origins, through the Romanesque transformations of the Middle Ages, to the echoes of popular devotion that still animate this unique place today.
Not a simple tourist route, but a layered journey through architectures that embrace one another, relics, mystical suggestions, and the filtered light that falls silently upon stones worn smooth by time.
