The Smaltoteca Museum of Ponte San Pietro, unique of its kind, houses over 1,500 works of art and numerous design objects created using the ancient yet little-known art of enameling. Fired enamel is a crystal that, due to its inimitable properties, permanently bonds to the metal on which it is fused at approximately 800 degrees Celsius. Enamel originated approximately 3,500 years ago on the island of Cyprus, from where it spread throughout the world, prized for its brilliance and durability, which make it comparable to precious gemstones. In these halls, you can admire this thousand-year-old history: from the bronze brooches of Roman soldiers to the reliquaries of the French school of Limoges, from sixteenth-century paintings and portraits to twentieth-century Italian works, from Orthodox icons to ancient and contemporary Asian enamels. The Museum is equipped with a specialist library, a conference room, and an educational workshop.
