This itinerary guides visitors through the discovery of the extraordinary Daunian collection, showcasing the rich heritage from the archaeological sites of the region
The "Polo Museale di Ascoli Satriano" is located in the monumental complex of Santa Maria del Popolo, consisting of the church and monastery. The monastery dates back to the 15th century, while the church is older, dating to around the 13th century. The latter has two naves with a polygonal apse. The interior still shows clear signs of restorations carried out in the mid-18th century, while the facade is in 17th-century style. The former church, now the Diocesan Auditorium, is in Baroque style. The monastery hosted the Hermit Fathers of the Order of St. Augustine until their suppression in 1809. Later, in 1818, it passed to the Redemptorist Sisters of St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori. The church and monastery finally closed in 1961. After a major restoration, since July 24, 2007, the structure has housed the Diocesan Museum and the Civic Archaeological Museum, with the aim of maximizing the value of our historical, artistic, and spiritual cultural heritage.
