Ready to uncover the mystery of bergamot? Once said to be poisonous just to conceal its extraordinary qualities, today it is the star of exquisite sweets and precious perfumes. On this journey, you will discover how the rinds are transformed into whistles or sunscreens, and marvel at the ancient iron machines that extracted the precious oil. You will explore magical bags made of broom plant, secret workshops, and great ships ready to carry this treasure to every corner of the world. Among giant photographs of important families and woven baskets, you will live a wonderfully fragrant adventure at the heart of Calabrian tradition.
Housed in the Old Covered Market of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, the Bergamot Museum is a sensory and cultural journey dedicated to the citrus fruit that symbolizes Calabria: the Citrus bergamia, the only one in the world cultivated in this narrow strip of land between the Aspromonte mountains and the Strait of Messina, which alone produces 80% of the entire world production. The museum was born as an emanation of the International Academy of Bergamot, founded in 2005, and tells the millenary history of the so-called "green gold": from ancient essential oil extraction tools to 19th-century industrial machines, from nutraceutical properties certified by scientific research to its endless applications in perfumery, gastronomy, cosmetics and medicine. A journey that intertwines peasant tradition, artisanal excellence and innovation, through experiential workshops, a perfumery school and dedicated showcooking events.
