Cattedrale di Nardò

Located in the historic center of Nardò, the cathedral was built in 1088 by the Norman Godfrey the Illustrious on the foundations of an ancient early Christian church from the 7th century. Remodeled several times over the centuries, it owes its current appearance to 19th-century restorations that restored its medieval character. The interior, with three naves in Lecce stone, houses precious frescoes from the 12th to the 15th century and the famous Black Christ, a wooden crucifix made of cedar wood from the 12th century. A national monument since 1879 and a Pontifical Minor Basilica since 1980, it is one of the most significant places of worship in the entire Salento region.
