Pozzo della Cava – A Journey into the Underground of Orvieto
An underground journey through Etruscan caves, medieval kilns, and a well with twenty-five centuries of history.
The Archaeological Complex of Pozzo della Cava is a descent into a fascinating corner of underground Orvieto, winding beneath the streets and houses of the oldest part of the medieval quarter. A 36-metre plunge into the heart of the tufa cliff, among small hypogeal treasures to discover in complete freedom and total safety. A heritage of archaeological evidence spanning from the Etruscan period to the medieval era and through to contemporary times, brought back to light through private commitment after centuries of abandonment. Since 2023, this site has been included in the UNESCO World Network of Water Museums (WAMU-NET).
