A route through the upper district of Scilla, starting from Piazza San Rocco — the "Belvedere del Mito" — with the bronzes of Francesco Triglia overlooking the Strait. Between the Church of San Rocco, the rare "baraccata" church of San Giovanni Battista, the birthplace of Raffaele Piria and the evocative Arco di San Giorgio, the path climbs up towards the Villa Comunale with the Casa Museo Melidoni, as far as the Chiesa Matrice and the Ruffo Castle. Seven stops between art, devotion, anti-seismic memory and views ranging from the Costa Viola to the coasts of Sicily.
Overlooking the Strait of Messina, at the edge of the Costa Viola, Scilla has always intertwined myth and daily life. It is Homer's Scylla, the sea creature that watches over the currents facing Charybdis, and at the same time the fishing village of swordfish fishermen, luntri boats, and songs handed down through its alleys. On the cliff stands the thousand-year-old Ruffo Castle, while at its feet cluster Chianalea, the "Venice of the South," and the golden expanse of Marina Grande. Higher up watches over the San Giorgio district, the civil and spiritual heart of the town, rebuilt with tenacity after the earthquakes of 1783 and 1908. Here Raffaele Piria, father of modern chemistry, was born, and here art, faith and landscape merge into a single story, where Sicily seems just a step away and the Aeolian Islands close the horizon.
