Pinacoteca Michele De Napoli

The "Michele de Napoli" Art Gallery originated from the testamentary bequest with which the artist, in 1892, donated his rich collection to the Municipality of Terlizzi: over a thousand works including paintings and drawings, to be preserved in the palace where he had lived, which he also made available to his fellow citizens and to all those wishing to enjoy his art. After lengthy restoration and refunctionalization works, designed to adapt the building to the needs of a modern art gallery, the palace returned to public use in 2009. In July 2010, the Municipal Administration set up the exhibition "Michele de Napoli: from 'historical painting' to the late works" there, a selection of 85 of the most significant works from almost sixty years of activity carried out between Naples, Rome, and Terlizzi. Today the Art Gallery, equipped with modern exhibition facilities and advanced information systems, does not limit itself to displaying the work of Michele de Napoli: it also offers opportunities for cultural deepening through temporary exhibitions.

PINACOTECA ITINERARY

The Pinacoteca Michele de Napoli occupies the eighteenth-century palace that was the birthplace and studio of the Terlizzi-born painter, in the heart of Terlizzi, a few steps from the Norman Tower. Upon his death in 1892, de Napoli left the building and the entire collection to the city, with the wish that it become a place to learn, admire and preserve art. The itinerary traces sixty years of the artist's activity through the 107 works of the permanent exhibition, arranged across seven rooms according to a thematic and chronological order: from the years of his Neapolitan and Roman training to civil and ecclesiastical commissions, from portraiture to the great studies for altarpieces, up to the altarpiece of the Madonna di Sovereto, linked to the city's devotion. The visit is guided by the voice of Michele de Napoli himself, who recounts in first person his own story and the works born from his work.
