The Co-Cathedral Basilica of Atri is one of the most important monumental complexes in Abruzzo, guardian of centuries of history, art and spirituality. The tour takes you on a journey of discovery through its architecture, chapels and great pictorial cycle, offering a voyage between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the heart of the city. Starting from 8 April 2026, major restoration works have begun in the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Atri. The intervention concerns the mural paintings of the apse and naves, with the aim of studying their state of conservation and restoring them to their former splendour. The works are supervised by the Soprintendenza, together with a team of specialist restorers and technicians. During this period, the frescoes painted by Andrea De Litio will not be visible to the public for several months. The overall restoration will last approximately one year. You can still continue your visit: thanks to the audio guide, you will be able to see images of the frescoes and discover their history. Thank you for your patience: soon you will be able to admire the Cathedral in a renewed guise.

THE PICTORIAL CYCLE OF THE BASILICA The basilica houses one of the most significant pictorial cycles of medieval Italian art, representing a fundamental milestone in the evolution of Western painting. This extraordinary decorative program, developed over several decades, involved some of the most important artists of the time and transformed the sacred space into a visual narrative of unprecedented complexity and beauty. The frescoes cover the walls of the upper and lower churches, creating a continuous theological and artistic discourse that guides the faithful through the fundamental stories of Christianity and Franciscan spirituality. The cycle is organized according to a precise iconographic program that reflects the theological and devotional priorities of the Franciscan Order and the Church of the period. In the upper church, the decoration follows a hierarchical scheme that moves from the vault to the lower registers. The ceiling vaults are adorned with representations of the four Evangelists and scenes from the life of Christ, while the upper walls feature stories from the Old and New Testaments. The lower register, the most famous, is entirely dedicated to the Stories of Saint Francis, a cycle of twenty-eight scenes that narrate the life of the saint from his youth to his death and posthumous miracles. This Franciscan cycle represents a revolutionary innovation in medieval art, both for its narrative approach and for its stylistic characteristics. The scenes are organized in a clear sequential order, creating a visual biography that was easily readable even for the illiterate faithful. Each episode is framed by painted architectural elements that create an illusion of depth and three-dimensionality, anticipating the spatial conquests of Renaissance art. The artistic quality of the frescoes varies considerably, reflecting the intervention of different masters and workshops over time. However, the overall coherence of the program testifies to careful planning and supervision that ensured stylistic and iconographic unity despite the multiplicity of hands involved. The lower church presents an even more complex decorative program, with chapels and spaces dedicated to different saints and theological themes. Here the frescoes create a more intimate and mystical atmosphere, suited to the crypt-like character of the space and its function as the burial place of Saint Francis. The pictorial cycle of the basilica not only represents an artistic masterpiece but also constitutes a fundamental document for understanding Franciscan spirituality and medieval visual culture. Through these images, the faithful could meditate on the mysteries of faith and the example of Saint Francis, in a visual experience that combined aesthetic beauty with spiritual edification.
