Historical Visit Itinerary
This itinerary will take you to discover Gropparello Castle in the province of Piacenza. Here, you'll discover its architecture, history, and the legends that surround this enchanting place suspended between earth and sky.
Perched on a wild landscape like an eagle's nest, Gropparello Castle (8th-13th centuries) impresses visitors with its turreted monumental complex, which offers a variety of scenic views throughout the visit. With an irregular plan due to the rugged terrain, the castle is an example of medieval fortification. Built to defend the valley's access route, it stands on a large ophiolitic plateau with a ravine that descends to the Vezzeno stream, making the castle impregnable. Still the private residence of its owners, it houses a beautiful collection of musical instruments, some of which are housed in an antique games room.

In the woods below Gropparello Castle, you don't go down alone: first you must call the knight, all together and out loud. From there you meet the woodcutter, the druid, the fairy and a rather untrustworthy ogre, you learn the rules of battle and the oath that makes you a knight, then you enter the fortress — the drawbridges, the chute for boiling oil above the gate, the ancient kitchens — and listen to the true story of Rosania Fulgosio, the lady of the castle who gave up her love to save her family. Thirty-five stops, between woods, castle and the year's festivals.
