Centrum Kultury Śląskiej

The palace in Nakło Śląskie is the former residence of the Henckel von Donnersmarck family, one of the most powerful dynasties of Upper Silesia, and today it houses the Centre for Silesian Culture. Built in the mid-19th century by Count Hugo I as a summer and hunting residence, it became a true family seat only during the time of his son Lazarus IV, from the Catholic Bytom-Nakło line. Behind the English neo-Gothic façade, only fragments of the original interiors have survived — stained glass windows, wooden joinery, an armored safe, traces of hand-painted color schemes — after the family fled the advancing front in 1945. Since almost no photographs of the old interiors have survived, the palace's history is being reconstructed from the memories of those who lived and worked here: it is not so much a history textbook as a story waiting to be written down.
