Longobards conference itinerary
This itinerary is dedicated to the 4th international conference of the Longobard study center ets entitled "GRIMOALDO from the Friulian duchy to the kingdom"
Museo: Villa De Claricini Dornpacher
Introduction to the Conference
Welcome to the 4th International Conference of the Longobard Studies Center ETS. This conference - hosted from April 24th to 28th, 2024 at the De Claricini Dornpacher Foundation - focuses on the central years of the 7th century, a "dark" but crucial period for the formation of the early Middle Ages, Italian history, and the birth of the Forogiuliese territory, centered around the name of the city that hosted one of the most illustrious Longobard duchies. The detailed European scenario of peoples and events that have characterized developments in a diachronic perspective provides the backdrop. The central figure is the powerful Longobard duke and later king, Grimoaldo. The conference presents the main historiographical orientations, the general historical context, the biography and actions of the king, along with the socioeconomic structures and cultural legacies. Artistic elaborations, the persistence of memory in linguistic remnants, and Longobard traditions, with a focus on the Friulian reality within the UNESCO serial network, where Cividale is the epiphenomenon of the Longobards' site in Italy, complete the conference proceedings. The multidisciplinarity and the long period, moreover, not only represent a characteristic, peculiar, and highly relevant trait of the scientific activities of the Longobard Studies Center, but also an innovative approach in historiographical reconstruction.

Biography of Grimoaldo
Son of Gisulfo II and Romilda, after a childhood in which he stood out for his courage earning great respect, he took refuge in Benevento to avoid submitting to his uncle Grasulfo, the new duke of Cividale, according to Paul the Deacon. Upon the death of Duke Rodoaldo, he rose to the leadership of the Beneventan duchy, successfully thwarting Byzantine ambitions and freeing the sanctuary of San Michele on Mount Gargano. Skillfully maneuvering between Godepert and Perctarit in the conflict for the throne succession, he supported the former and then, after both were ousted, achieved royal dignity in Pavia. With him, all the Lombard lands, from north to south, were reunited under a single sovereign, skilled in governing the different regions with a network of loyal men from the Mezzogiorno. Engaged in internal affairs of the kingdom and the duchies, he was active on the international stage and in the religious field; despite being an Arian believer, he showed full tolerance towards Catholics thanks to the influence exerted by his second wife; his legislative activity is evidenced by the nine capitula issued as an integration of the Edict of Rothari. Grimoaldo died in 671, leaving the throne to his underage son Garibaldo, who was deposed a few months later by Perctarit as the kingdom took a different political direction.
