Ducal Palace of Medinaceli
This ducal palace was for centuries the seat of government of a state that no longer exists today. Now another idea lives within it: bringing contemporary art to a Soria that is emptying out. You will cross a Renaissance courtyard covered by a transparent dome — which hosts six festivals a year — and a hall where the president of the foundation has gathered, over thirty years, one work for every artist he has fallen in love with: almost four hundred. Under the same roof, a Roman triumphal arch and the art of today coexist.
In 1479 the Catholic Monarchs elevated the county of Medinaceli to a duchy, and this building became the seat of government of the Ducal States. Today, within these walls, lives the DEARTE Foundation, with a mission that fits into two words: culture and repopulation. Bringing contemporary art to the Soria that is emptying out.
The heart of the visit is the 17th-century Renaissance courtyard, now covered by a transparent dome that keeps it alive all year round. From there the galleries unfold: in one, president Miquel Tugores gathered, over thirty years, a work by every artist who moved him—nearly four hundred pieces. And beneath today's art peeks out that of two thousand years ago: a three-arched Roman triumphal arch, one of the few still standing in the world.
