The Museum of Chinese and Ethnographic Art of the Xaverian Missionaries of Parma was founded in 1901 at the behest of Bishop Guido M. Conforti, the founder of the congregation. For over a century, missionaries active in China and later in other countries around the world collected and sent to Parma works of art, everyday life instruments, ritual artifacts, and cultural testimonies from distant peoples. The result is a collection organized into two main areas: Chinese art and ethnography, the latter encompassing materials from China, Africa, and the Amazon region. A museum that is not merely a container of objects, but a living document of the encounter between different cultures.
