Rocca Albornoz e Museo Nazionale del Ducato di Spoleto
Information
Piazza Bernardino Campello, 1, 06049 Spoleto PGItinerary Rocca Albornoz and the National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto
Welcome to the Rocca Albornoz in Spoleto! It is a fortress located on the top of the Sant'Elia hill overlooking the city. This fortress was the main bastion of the fortification system built by Pope Innocent VI, to militarily strengthen and make more evident the authority of the Church in the territories of central Italy, in view of the now imminent return of the papal seat to Rome after about seventy years of permanence in Avignon. This place today houses the National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto.
The Rocca Albornoz was built by order of the Spanish cardinal Egidio Albornoz, starting in 1360: it was the seat of papal legates and popes. In 1499, for a short period, Lucrezia Borgia also lived there, as governor.
Today, thanks to the progressive recovery of the rooms and the mural paintings that still adorn the walls, the complex has finally regained its primitive charm after having been used as a prison for a long time.
Inside it is housed the National Museum, which collects the testimonies of the Spoleto area from the 4th to the 15th century. Inaugurated in 2007, it was born thanks to a project to collect works of art and materials, already largely preserved at the Civic Museum and Art Gallery.
