Within these walls, in the autumn of 1917, Gabriele d'Annunzio found his home — poet, aviator, aesthete, and inspirer of men. From this castle, on the airfield set up in the surrounding grounds, the Flight over Vienna was born and took shape: a propagandistic and symbolic undertaking that on August 9, 1918, led eleven Italian aircraft to fly over the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, dropping four hundred thousand leaflets over the heart of the enemy.
