Cappella degli Scrovegni
The Scrovegni Chapel, dedicated to Santa Maria della Carità, was commissioned by the wealthy Paduan Enrico Scrovegni in the early 14th century, next to his palace and the ancient Roman Arena. Between 1303 and 1305 Giotto frescoed its entire interior: the Stories of Joachim and Anna, of the Virgin and of Christ along the walls, the Vices and Virtues on the lower band, and the great Last Judgment on the entrance wall, beneath a blue vault dotted with stars. It is Giotto's masterpiece and a turning point in the history of Western art, for its sense of depth and the humanity of its figures. Since 2021 the cycle has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the serial site "The 14th-century fresco cycles of Padua".
