Mostra "Renoir, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cézanne - 200 anni di Arte dalla Collezione Scharf" - Palazzo Ducale
From 16 October 2026 to 2 May 2027, Palazzo Ducale in Genoa presents, for the first time in Italy, over 140 masterpieces from the Scharf Collection, one of the most important private collections in Germany. The exhibition spans two centuries of art, from Goya to Corot, Matisse and Léger, up to contemporary artists Tony Cragg and Katharina Grosse.
The collection originated in Berlin with Otto Gerstenberg, a passionate collector of Modernism and the French avant-garde. His daughter Margarethe Scharf saved its core during the Second World War. Her sons Walther and Dieter developed it into two branches. Dieter's Surrealist branch has been part of the Scharf-Gerstenberg Collection in Charlottenburg since 2008. Walther, together with Eve and René, expanded the French section.
Today René and Christiane Scharf continue to collect, with an eye toward contemporary art. Keep this in mind as you walk through: each room also marks a passage between generations.
