Fundación Isana - Casa Museo La Vorágine
The Casa Museo La Vorágine stands in Orocué, on the banks of the Meta River, which at the beginning of the twentieth century was Colombia's first international port. Built in 1898 by Teodoro Jacinto Amézquita, in 1918 the house hosted José Eustasio Rivera, who had come as a lawyer for a dispute between cattle estates. Here Rivera found the inspiration for La Vorágine, the novel that in 1924 denounced the enslavement of rubber workers. For ninety-two years Isabel Amézquita, known as Chavita, safeguarded its memory. Restored by the Isana Foundation, the house has been a museum since 2018. The tour tells the story of the port and the llanero culture, the denunciation of the rubber trade, the life of Chavita and the daily life of Orocué, through original documents, period objects and artworks inspired by the novel.
