Museo Paleontologico - Comune di Magliano Vetere
Ninety-five million years ago, a small sea turtle walked across the mud of a coastal marsh, right where Magliano Vetere stands today. Its trackway, about three metres long, is one of the finds on display at the Paleontological Museum, which opened in 2009 in an area whose fossils helped earn the Cilento a place among the UNESCO Geoparks. The route begins with the Big Bang and, room after room, leads to the fossil sites discovered just a few kilometres from here: Petina, where Sagaria cilentana, one of the first flowering plants in history, was found; Ottati, with its slabs covered in small fish that died together fifty million years ago; and Monte Vesole, with the shrimps that rewrote the history of their group. The visit ends with a large diorama of the Cretaceous featuring Ciro, the first dinosaur discovered in Italy. Since 2023, Magliano Vetere has been the "Town of Paleontology" of the Cilento.
